University Access

CIYOTA's University Access Program tackles the complex barriers refugees and host community youth seeking higher education face. Beyond assisting with university applications, the program provides financial aid, socio-emotional support, processing of travel documents, and career guidance. These efforts equip students for both academic and personal success. In partnership with the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program and universities worldwide, CIYOTA has enabled 108 conflict-affected and disadvantaged students to access higher education. Notably, 68 graduates have returned to their communities to inspire positive change, while 63 (36 males and 27 females) are now employed or managing their ventures, contributing to community development

Program Focus

The program targets talented youth who excel academically and demonstrate strong community leadership, focusing on those who have completed senior six education. Selected students participate in a one-year intensive training that prepares them for university scholarships and job opportunities.

The curriculum covers essential skills like:

  • Basic computer literacy
  • Leadership and entrepreneurship
  • English language proficiency for French speakers
  • Travel documentation
  • Career guidance

For students who do not secure scholarships, CIYOTA helps them establish income-generating projects while they await other opportunities. Graduates are encouraged to give back to their communities, creating a transformation and growth cycle.

Vision for 2025

In 2025, CIYOTA aims to raise funds to directly support six senior refugee/IDP graduates, especially girls, attending university and pursuing teaching degrees in ECD and primary and secondary education.

This initiative seeks to address the shortage of qualified refugee teachers and reduce the dependence on educators from host communities who may not fully understand the experiences of refugees.

CIYOTA aims to strengthen instructional leadership in its supported schools by empowering refugee teachers with skills and knowledge, creating a more inclusive and impactful learning environment for displaced communities.
